Chapter 4: Wright Peak

Chapter 4 Wright Started my weekend heading to my base Camp of Draper’s Acres. This weekend was an eye opener full of learning from other more experienced hikers. I arrived early afternoon at base camp finished setting camp by midafternoon. Found a new restaurant that is a little off the beaten path. From the outside it looks like a dive, but the inside is nicely done. The Food service here was top notch. The waitress was attentive without being pushy. The restaurant is called Lisa G’s off of Sentinel rd, right on the corner towards the turn off for lake placid. Forget Domino’s Pizza or any other pizzeria you normally get your wings for football Sunday. I am not the biggest wing fan, but these wings were perfectly sauced and cooked. Easily the best dinner I have had in a long time. I had a light refreshing cocktail, appetizer, salad for an entrĂ©e perfectly tossed in the dressing and desert all for under $50.00. I do not recommend Lake Placid pub and brewery. The appetizer was s...

Planning for High Peak #4

This year, I aspire to summit at least six high peaks. While achieving more would be wonderful, it is not essential. My next climb will be completed in late June of 2025. i am trying to figure out which peak I am going to summit, as it is becoming difficult to plan the peaks as I am slowly making my way into the center of the Eastern High Peaks Wilderness zone.      To say that I am stressed or more accurately anxious is hitting the nail on the head so to speak. Then I found a campground that is extremely close to Cliff, so I thought let's tackle those two. Once again, I started on my research of summitting Cliff and Redfield and ultimately chose not to summit those two mountains so early on. As you can see with the multitude of options that I have I am starting to see that I am going to have to be strategic with my different climbs as my vacation time is limited just like anyone else's time. Thus, I am going to have to go by distance and durati...

Chapter 3: Phelps Mountain

Chapter 3: The third weekend of September I embarked on my next camping adventure. Camping excursion started out with an unexpected upgrade to a large camp site. At first, I was excited to have more at my base camp, but when I arrived at my site, I soon realized why the person that was supposed to be there originally wanted my site instead. Glass bottles in the firepit rendering it unusable, therefore I wasn’t able to start a fire to roast smores. So instead, I sat there for the night until it got chilly knitting a hat for Christmas gift. This hike took me 12 hours to complete as I took my time and really enjoyed myself throughout the hike. I chose not to push myself because I realized from my previous or learned from it that I lost the key component of my adventure which is and always will be to enjoy the hike and just be present in my surroundings. Although towards the end I did have a slight panic attack due to daylight fading, as I didn’t have a flashlight a hard lesson learn...

Chapter 1: Preparation and Planning

Introduction : When I first started out, I was just thinking of going for an adventure of journey and growth with a sense of accomplishment. What I didn’t expect was the ideas that are starting to form with it from letting go of my past traumas and heartache to renewing my sense of self all the way to the possibility of writing a book of my adventure in the high peaks. Preparation: Cost wise this adventure is from the start expensive. Following is a list of what I had to get as I started from scratch with very little in the way of equipment as I mentioned early in my ramblings. If you have the tent and sleeping essentials you are ahead of the game as through my research, I have found that a decent sleeping bag and tent are costly. 1.       New tent from amazon- $80.00 2.       Hiking boots- on sale from REI- $120.00 3.       Hiking socks- REI- $30.00 4.       Hiking pants-REI-$35.00x2=$70.00 ( in case you do anothe...

Chapter 2: Cascade and Porter

Preparation: I had a tent and sleeping bag and mat as well as a camp stove. Much to my dismay I lost my poles to pitch the tent.   Found a similar one on amazon, tent purchased. Then I had to get hiking boots and clothing as well as a daypack and other equipment that is needed more to follow on that in the coming chapters. So, I made reservations for me myself and I to begin my journey. Draper’s acres was perfect the correct location just 3 minutes up the road from my first high peak. The people at the front office were very friendly and extremely helpful. The drive to the campground was about 5 hours for me.  Trip #1: I arrived on Friday in August a couple of weeks before my birthday. Due to weather that day I arrived later then I had expected so was pitching my tent in the dark not the best idea, but i didn't have any choice. Luckily, I found a very nice couple to help me out. Once that was all set up it was time to make some dinner. Much to my chagrin I could not get...
